... Big Read
Big Read is a 2003 book survey carried out by the BBC. They supposedly found the Nation's Best-loved Book, and I find some (29 of 200) books on the list that I've read. The tall matrix image on the left, dimensions 200 x 11, incorporates my Big Read signature as the 7th column, where 28 black dots (and an orange one for my favourite) indicate my books as they appear on the list. The other 10 columns, sorted by the number of books read, represent signatures of others. Their nicknames are linked to their web pages. (Lilit and Bo would've been linked here.) We are all ardent lovers of charming words.
These lists come in different flavours, Doppelganger the great reader blogged about one such list (Thirty Books Everyone Should Read Before They Die). However, the Big Read list seems very comprehensive to me.
I was perhaps a little disappointed by the number of replies (11), for I mailed many more (40) for help, and it would be interesting for me to know why some bothered to reply while some didn't. Perhaps their list is too short ("what's too short?") or they would rather sign a different one. - It's not my list either, it's ours, the list of our most beloved English books. And everybody could've figured it by now that the whole idea of life is to join the dance. Remember that till the next time, in case you don't already know.
I think I could read a bit more bigreadish, and I probably will, for every one from the list that I've read was very good, and I don't see why other's wouldn't be as well. So, Big Read: count on me!
Hey, here's an idea: Why won't we all come back together in a year or two, mail Bo the signatures again, and see how our matrix changes!
The picture is also showing me this:
- Can anybody read more bigreadish than Lilit? She read 78 books or 40% of the list!
- Two have the same favourite book: BeeBee and Irenca both love Pride and Prejudice the most. It's a helluva book indeed.
- The read books are also more concentrated at the beginning on the top. Those are the most known books, that's true, and the books at the end of the list are then more esoteric. There are many many (77) that nobody has read, or the numbers: 9, 13, 27, 28, 33, 34, 37, 44, 45, 48, 49, 50, 53, 55, 57, 61, 66, 72, 76, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 86, 88, 89, 95, 96, 99, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 113, 115, 116, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 127, 129, 131, 132, 138, 139, 140, 142, 149, 150, 155, 156, 159, 160, 162, 163, 165, 167, 168, 170, 172, 176, 181, 183, 186, 188, 192, 196, 198 and 200. - Why are there so many?
- Have we all read some particular book? No we didn't, the closest to that are the numbers 15 and 180: The Catcher in the Rye and The Little Prince, which was a bit predictable, I suppose.
- Apart from that two books, the intersection is even more empty. Nevertheless, here are the most favourite in general (having at least 8 out of 11 common readers): The Lord of the Rings, Pride and Prejudice, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Winnie the Pooh, Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, Animal Farm, Matilda, The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole Aged 133, The Picture Of Dorian Gray and Jonathan Livingstone Seagull. Hooray for: Pooh, Matilda and Jonathan, also here are way too many Harry's for my taste (I didn't read any of them) ...

Let's repeat the most important lesson: One should learn to join the dance.
It's the theme of The Prince of Egypt (1998), and there's a song, Through Heaven's Eyes - you you can listen to it by clicking here -, that encaptures the spirit nicely:
And though you never know all the steps
You must learn to join the dance
You must learn to join the dance
Lai-la-lai ...
Hej....
Sem šla takoj pogledat kakšni so rezultati. In kaj ugotovim?
Dajte no, slikca bo toliko bolj široka in zanimiva!
Poslan preostanek seznama.
Oprosti in hvala!
Levji delez k mojemu seznamu doprinese Discworld Terryja Pratchetta.
Prav dobro o tem pove Lev Kreft v nekem radijskem nastopu.
Spoznajte: vexter in irenco:
- Vexter je včeraj postala diplomirana inženirka! Plosk plosk plosk, daj, zaploskaj ji še ti.
No, pa dajmo:
1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 22, 25, 30, 35, 39, 43, 44, 46, 54, 56, 60, 65, 68, 69, 73, 74, 78, 81, 87, 89, 93, 94, 100, 101, 102, 104, 118, 119, 126, 130, 132, 134, 135, 137, 145, 148, 151, 152, 153, 169, 171, 173, 174, 175, 177, 180, 193, 194, 197
Of course, silly me.
100 Most Influential Books of the Century
Sicer ni veliko leposlovja, ampak kar ga je, se mi zdi precej bolj relevantno bot BBC-jev seznam.
owca: lepa hvala za tale link. Sila zanimivo! Celo tri strokovne in nekaj leposlovnih s seznama sem prebral.
